An organisation built around one stubborn problem: evidence that does not survive the journey from the field to the decision.
MESRI, Mekong Environmental and Social Research and Innovation, works on environmental and social change in the Mekong region. We design and run the studies, help programmes act on what comes back, and build the product that keeps the data intact in between.
01 · Mission
What we are trying to do
The Mekong is changing faster than the evidence about it. Dams, climate pressure, migration and rapid commercial growth reshape communities in a few seasons, while the studies that describe those communities take years to commission, run and publish.
We work to close that gap in two directions at once. Better studies, designed with the people who will use the findings rather than handed to them at the end. And better instruments: tooling that takes a survey from design to a signed-off report without three manual re-keyings and a fortnight of spreadsheet archaeology.
The organisation is deliberately small and deliberately technical. The people who design the studies are the people who build the solution, ensuring our tools are shaped directly by the realities of the field. This seamless integration eliminates traditional research bottlenecks, allowing MESRI to translate fast-moving regional changes into actionable, real-time insights. By removing the lag between data collection and delivery, we empower stakeholders across the Mekong to navigate transformation with speed, clarity, and precision.
What we hold to
- Say what the data supports. Findings are reported with their limits attached, including the inconvenient ones.
- Design for the enumerator. An instrument that is awkward in the field produces data that is wrong in the office.
- Bilingual by default. Khmer is not a translation layer added at the end; it is a first-class language in the work and in the tools.
- Leave the capability behind. A good engagement ends with the team able to run the next round without us.
- Assume the connection drops. Field tools that only work on good wifi do not work.
